Memorial Day started at the Hanover Community Center which had a
breakfast of coffee, sweet rolls and begals. There were about 10 of us
from Slattery there. It took place before the Memorial Day ceremonies
from 7:30 to 8:15. Then we hopped over to the town hall for the flag
raising and lowering to half staff. Some wreath laying and a gun
salute. A few words and then we went to the high school for the start
of the parade.
While waiting for the 9:30 start of the parade we were standing around
talking. There were about a dozen of us when a female Army lieutenent
(Lt. Shannon Ziccarello, US Army) walked up and asked when the
American Legion’s spot would be. No one from the Legion was around and
she was going to march with them. We told her she could join us if
she’d like, and she did. We also had Sharon Einbinder, a female Marine
officer, join us also. They lead our marching group.
Tony and Tom didn’t feel like walking so we more or less lead the
parade in Tony’s white Corvette convertible. We were right in the
front of the parade after the parade Grand Marshal and color guard.
The parade ended at the American Legion.
Our Sharon Einbinder was the guest speaker and gave a very nice
speech. Finally after several honorary plaques were given out and the
high school band played while we stood in formation in the hot Sun, we
were dismissed.
When that was finished they had hotdogs and beer/soda and ice cream.
Nice day but far too much as it was 88 degrees and Sunny.

Tom Miller
