Today I will honor and pay my respects to a Marine who was killed in action in Viet Nam 54 years ago today. Robert J. Slattery and I served in Boot Camp 55 years ago at Parris Island, SC. We were both members of Bravo Company, Platoon 121, 1st Recruit Training Battalion.
Robert grew up in the town of Whippany, New Jersey. Robert lost his life in Viet Nam at a place called Gio Linh in Northern I Corps. Gio Linh was part of a place called Leatherneck Square, just about a click and half from the DMZ.
He was a member of H&S Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division. He was nine days short of his 21st Birthday and had just about a month left on his 13 month tour. He was one of those men who lost their todays so WE could have our tomorrows. I don’t forget Men like him and neither should you.
May he RIP and Semper Fi
