L/CPL Robert J. Slattery, Marine Corps League Det #206, NEWSLETTER, Jul 2019 - #3
Commandant's Corner

It was great to see a large bunch of our members at the “Flag Placing” at Gate of Heaven. We had a enjoyable time on May 25 learning history and paying our respects. There were about 13 of our members and 4 from the family of Ben Tucker. We made short work in the honoring of our past veterans. After, we held a short “unrecognized” meeting with beer and hot dogs. In for a quick breakfast at 0715 and out with the hot dogs at 1130 - a quick 4 hours of enjoyable time.

As you can read later in this newsletter the Memorial Day went good. I would have liked to see a few more members, but we had a good turn-out. Breakfast was nice, the ceremonies went off without a hitch. Jim Loizides was our stand-in Chaplain and really didn’t let the detachment or title down. Mike Dougherty was suburb in his job as Guest Speaker at the American Legion.

We have a special appearance with Karl Bischoff (grandson of Al) who stood in rank and marched in formation with us. Thanks Karl.

Now that we are past the “Big Event” day, we have to concentrate on the up-coming months. The first concern will be to Rose Outings. Thanks for helping out with the ShopRite one on June 8th. The next one coming up about the time this Newsletter comes out is June 29. We will be in my home area at The Greater Morristown ShopRite in Cedar Knolls. See Bob or Anthony about assisting if it is not too late.

I’d like to see several more outings set up for the end of July, August and September. We have a fun one coming up on 15 Sept at Oct Miller (formerly Konner) Chevrolet in West Caldwell and my favorite Our Lady of the Lake Church,Verona. on the second and third of November.

The next main concern will be the Golf Outing. This happens at the end of July (the 25th to be precise). This is our largest fund-raiser and it provides funds which allows Marines Care to do the good work that they do. So, at the meeting, take several of the Golf Outing brochures and get the donations or the golfers and the hole representation that we need.

We will be doing a Birthday Ball ad book this year again. No, you do not have to do much physical work with this. Get me a couple of ads (doctors, dentist, car dealership, bar or whomever you do business at) and I’ll do the rest. This is where the raises funds for ourselves. There will be more on this at the meeting.

I do not want to go on and on about working, but you will have to agree, eating pizza is great and it is paid for by us raising money for the detachment.

I have received some good calls from across the country of people hearing the good that we do for the veterans. These are veterans who are sometimes in dire need of help.We do make a difference and it is noticed. I know the local government, police department and fire department thinks highly of us. We also help our local vets and even have helped our members. That is why you came Marines, to help people.

So, let us all get into the “Semper Fi mode” and help out. Forget the “let the other guy do it.” Now that we are past Memorial Day I will wish each of you a happy, healthy and safe summer. Be careful and do what you can to help the detachment.

Semper Fi, Tom Miller
