Robert was KIA on 6 July 1967 at a place called Gio Linh in Northern I Corps. Gio Linh was one of the locations in Leatherneck Square. He was just nine days short of turning 21 and just weeks before his 13-month tour would end.
It is in Robertís honor that the Morris County Detachment of the Marine Corps League in Whippany, New Jersey was issued a Charter and renamed the L/Cpl. Robert J. Slattery Detachment on August 30th, 1967. Our Charter states that our Organization was renamed in memory of those Marines who by their deeds and heroism have set the Standard that is our guide today.
There will be a dedication to honor Robert in July, date TBD. Our Detachments monthly meetings are the first Wednesday of each month. In July we have changed the day to Thursday, 6 July to honor Robert. A wreath will be placed at the cemetery where he is buried. Please take a moment to honor this Marine and local Hero who lost his life defending our Freedom and the Freedom of those who cannot do it alone.
